ACCESSORIES REPORT
Spring 2008

By Jennifer Goodkind

Spring is about renewal. For those of us who live in more regularly
crappy climates, Spring represents the annual ritual of shedding layers
to reveal and expose ourselves for the first time since last summer or
our last warm weather vacation. Many women I have spoken to are far
more comfortable bundled up not just to protect themselves from the
bracing cold of winter, but as a way of providing ample coverage to
hide behind so that they don't have to bare their bodies beyond
face and hands. So as temperatures climb and we shed our Winter armor,
we will need to focus on adding pieces to our closets that will embrace
the looks of the season as well as play up our strengths and distract
ourselves from our less than perfect areas.

Jayne and I will never stop emphasizing the importance of undergarments
in creating a canvas for all that you put on. Whether Spanx, Dr. Rey's
Shapewear Collection or simply a great pair of Wolford or Donna Karan
control top pantyhose, a smooth line from bust to the knees is the one
accessory everyone must buy into. The right underpinnings give you
extra confidence to take with you wherever you're going. Think of your
bras and panties as the ultimate "must have" accessory!
Color is everywhere! Neon has made it's way to nail salons as a "most
requested" trend in nail color. If your taste runs toward the neutrals,
a dash of color on your toes is an easy way to add a pop to your look.
The color you choose should work with your skin tone. A bright color on
short nails looks great with black or white.

We can't wax poetically enough about accessories without "honorable mention" being paid to the latest fabulous offerings in jewelry. Light, muted
colored semi -precious stones such as Mint Quartz and Rose of France are
positively gorgeous when you're wearing color or as a way to add a hint
of color. Pale green, pale pink or pale yellow stones are feminine and
look beautiful in a pair of drop earrings or on a pendant. Rose gold is
here to stay. Whether mixed with white gold or yellow gold pieces you
already own or simply by itself, rose gold is being offered at all
price points.

60's "grooviness" can be a great accent to your wardrobe. Think
rounded toe ballerina flats in colors, anything in patent leather,
chunky heals, bell bottom/wide leg jeans and bold colors. There's a
little bit of Twiggy in all of us!

70's bohemian translates to peasant inspired and embroidered tops,
wedge heals and anything Carly Simon might have worn while writing
You're So Vein. Tribal accents like beading on shoes, bags and belts
are another hip way to look fabulous in a pair of jeans and a top.
80's neon is a modern way to add brightness to your look. Shoes, bags
and nail polish can brighten your Summer days with a the confident
addition of a bright color.

Everything old is always new again. Reinterpretation is what takes
retro into modern and ultimately makes a look a classic. Each look has
an accompanying iconic figure. I have been asked many times who my
style icons are. Consider who yours might be, add your lifestyle, budget
and personal style and voila, you can interpret any look to suit your
taste and budget. The women of every era who embody the sensibility
that becomes synonymous with that time (Babe Paley, Jackie Onassis,
Jane Birkin, Bianca Jagger, Ali McGraw) are our inspirations. We can be
our own stylists. Being fashionable is knowing what looks good on you
and wearing what is right for the occasion. Accessories are the perfect
accent to anything you wear if they add to the look and can reinvent a
look you already own by adding another layer of style. They are also
more often than not, the pieces that you pull out season after season
(sometimes skipping a year or two in between) which can be
reinterpreted and paired with whatever is new to your closet. That is
priceless!
